Episode guide for series 7 (2011) ►

Amanda Burton joined Waterloo Road in 2010 as headteacher Karen Fisher.  An instantly dynamic and ambitious presence, Karen is determined to bring her unique vision to the school and make it a safe, vibrant place to learn. But Karen's steely exterior masks a deeper fragility as she and her family wrestle with the aftermath of a recent tragedy.

At home Karen has to cope with a cheating husband, Charlie (Ian Puleston Davies), a rebellious daughter, Jess (Linzey Cocker), and bulimic son Harry (Ceallach Spellman). Karen will have plenty of personal traumas to contend with as she battles her first term at Waterloo Road and attempts to keep her home life and school life separate.

Never one to shirk from a challenge, Karen has amassed a mix of personalities in the staffroom. Old regulars Grantly (Philip Martin Brown), Ruby (Elizabeth Berrington) and Tom (Jason Done) are joined by sexy, opinionated Spanish teacher Cesca (Karen David), principled home-school advocate Marcus (Wil Johnson) and Karen's own husband Charlie.

Also joining Karen's team is former pupil Janeece (Chelsee Healey) as school secretary – and it's very much a case of opposites attract as her warm, slightly dizzy approach collides with Karen's no-nonsense efficiency.

This term, Karen wants every staff member to pull their weight and it's down to ever-loyal Deputy Head Chris (Will Ash) to keep rebellion to a minimum.

Waterloo Road is a Shed Production (who were also responsible for Bad Girls and Footballers’ Wives).for BBC Scotland.

The executive producers for Shed Productions are Sharon Hughff and Lis Steele and the executive producer for the BBC is Gaynor Holmes.

The series has been commissioned by Jay Hunt, Controller BBC One and  n Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning.

Series One to Five

The first episode of Waterloo road was broadcast on 9th March 2006.  The main characters were headmaster Jack Rimmer played by Jason Merrells, deputy head Andrew Treneman played by Jamie Glover and pastoral care teacher Kim Campbell played by Angela Griffin.

During the first series of eight episodes first broadcast in 2006, the school faced closure by the governors due to a lack of pupils and bad publicity.  The previous headmaster had a nervous breakdown after 30 years at the school. The series is set in Rochdale, Greater Manchester and focuses on teachers and students confronting social issues like affairs, abortion, divorce and suicide.

Series two had twelve parts and was broadcat in 2007.  Notable storylines in this series of the show include the arrival and departure of prospective sponsor governors Jerry Preston and Roger Aspinall, the drug dealing by Gemma and Jed Seddon, the alcoholism of trainee teacher Russell Millen, and the bullying of Mika Grainger by fellow pupil Leigh-Ann Galloway.

Series three had twenty episodes and was broadcast 2007/2008 .  The series began with headmaster Jack Rimmer (played by Jason Merrells) recording a Radio documentary featuring the death of his colleague Izzie Redpath (played by Jill Halfpenny). Jack had witnessed Izzy's stabbing at the very end of the last series, although it had not been revealed that she had died.  With Andrew Treneman gone, having accepted a teaching post in Rwanda, Eddie (played by Neil Morrissey), became the deputy head. Davina Shackleton accused of having a sexual relationship with a pupil then being forced to date the pupils father, only for her to be saved by Tom Clarkson

Series four comprised of 20 episodes that aired in 2009 when Rachel Mason (played by Eva Pope) and Davina Shackleton (played by Christine Tremarco) both return following the fire that nearly destroyed the school. Maxine Barlow is tragically killed when her relationship with psychotic Earl Kelly comes to an explosive end, and she is fatally shot. Former teacher, Kim Campbell (played by Angela Griffin) returns from Rwanda and brings with her a baby girl, Grace, who she claims is her daughter. However, after Immigration officers investigate her, it transpires that Kim has in fact smuggled Grace into the UK illegally.

Series five was broadcast in 2009/2010 with 20 episodes and features the merger of Waterloo Road with the local posh, private school - John Fosters. The current Head Teacher, Rachel Mason, and newly appointed executive Head Teacher, (Max Tyler played by Tom Chambers), immediately clash, causing a lot of tension, especially when Max takes the liberty of using Rachel's office.  Six new teachers from John Fosters transferred to Waterloo Road to support the merger.
