One of the BBC's most popular dramas, Waking the Dead regularly draws audiences of over 8 million in the UK. It's twice been nominated for an International Emmy and in 2004 won the award for Best Drama Series, with specific reference to writer Stephen Davis for Breaking Glass, directed by David Thacker, and writer Ed Whitmore for Multistorey, directed by Bob Bierman.

There have been eight series so far. Each story is split into two hour-
Detective Superintendent Peter Boyd played by Trevor Eve is the central character and heads the Cold Case Unit. He is renowned for shouting at both the suspects that he interviews and the members of his own team. He has attended Anger Management courses and even consulted a psychiatrist. He was particularly affected by the death of his son who was a drug addict and DS Mel Silver while working on his team.
Psychological Profiler Dr Grace Foley is played by Sue Johnston. She has thirty years experience in her field and she has a close working relationship with Boyd often bringing him back to Earth when he starts “to lose it”. She is unmarried and has no children appearing to be married to the job.
Dectective Inspector Spencer Jordan played by Wil Johnson is a leg-
Forensic Pathologist Eve Lockhart played by Tara Fitzgerald is the third pathologist that the team has had she replaced Felix Gibson (Esther Hall) in Series 6, who had followed on from Frankie Wharton (Holly Aird). All have been dedicated and conscientious going to incredible lengths to provide the evidence and information that the team needs.
Detective Sergeant Stella Goodman played by Felicite du Jeu replaced Mel Silver (Claire Goose) in Series 5 who was killed at the end of Series 4 in the story Shadowplay. The episode also marked the final appearance of Frankie Wharton (Holly Aird). She is good friends with Spencer and was initially disliked by Boyd.
Detective Sergeant Amelia “Mel” Silver played by Claire Goose often questioned Boyd and was as a child taken from her mother who was considered to be mentally unfit.
The programme is frequently shown on cable/satellite channels and is due for a Ninth series on BBC1.
