The Tudors is historical fiction which takes liberties with the life and reign of Henry VIII and is named after the English dynasty.  There have been four series totalling 38 episodes and the first series aired in 2007.  The programme is produced by Peace Arch Entertainment for Showtime in the US in association with Reveille Eire, Working Title Films and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Series Four

Series Four started on BBC2 from 22nd January 2011.  This starts as King Henry learns that his friends King Francis and Charles Brandon are dying. Confronted with mortality, the ghosts of his former wives pay him a visit and Hans Holbein paints a last portrait of Henry.  Henry's health worsens after his military campaign against France and he suffers constant pain from his ulcerous leg. Meanwhile, Bishop Gardiner accuses Henry's wife Catherine Parr of being a heretic.

Series Three

The third series which aired on BBC2 from 21st August 2009 covers the years of Henry’s marriages to Jane Seymour and Anne of Cleaves.  Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays King Henry, Annabelle Wallis plays Jane Seymour and Joss Stone plays Anne of Cleaves.  In the third series Thomas Cromwell played by James Frain plays a more pivotal role giving more bad advice to the monarch particularly in choosing his wives.

Series Two

Season Two finds Henry as the head of the Church of England, after his break with the Catholic Church, which refused to grant him a divorce from Katherine. He secretly marries Anne and then his attention shifts toward Jane Seymour.

Series One

Season One covers the period of Henry VIII's reign in which his effectiveness as King is tested by international conflicts as well as political intrigue in his own court. He reject his wife Katherine of Aragon for Anne Boleyn when she bares him no heir. He also has a string of affairs, and fathers a son, Henry, by Elizabeth Blount.

History rewritten

The series rewrites history and even creates a fictional king for Portugal.  The papal politics depicted in the first series do not match with actual events.  The series has also been criticised for not showing the king as the 20 stone monster that he was but a rather more dashing character.  However, they do portray the king as power-hungry and cold-hearted which is nearer the mark.  Henry is a young man at the start of series one but his loves and obsessions as he grows older make him a more dangerous prospect .

Love scenes...and nudity

The programme can certainly be described as raunchy and is certainly a romp. There are love scenes and nudity but as Jonathan Rhys Meyers says he was happy to get away from the rainy days in Dublin where the show is filmed and into bed with Natalie Dormer, Charlotte Salt and Joss Stone!
