Homepage ► Agatha Christie’s Poirot

This is an ITV drama series that has been on the air since 1989 starring David Suchet as the fiction Belgian detective Poirot.
Initially it was made by London Weekend Television and more recently by Granada Productions.
There have been 65 episodes -
David Suchet plays Hercule Poirot
Apparently David Suchet was recommended for the role by the Christie family after seeing him playing the character of Blott in the TV adaptation of Tom Sharpe’s Blott on the Landscape. Suchet, for his part, read most of Agatha Christie’s Poirot novels to prepare himself before shooting began. It is generally accepted that his portrayal is the most faithful to the books. The series has had a glittering cast that has included Hugh Fraser as the dependable Captain Hastings and Philip Jackson as Chief Inspector Japp. Also featured have been Zoe Wanamaker, David Yelland, Pauline Moran, Joely Richardson, Samantha Bond, Christopher Eccleston, Hermione Norris, Damian Lewis, James Fox, Emily Blunt, David Soul, Geraldine James, Elliot Gould, Roger Lloyd Pack and Russel Tovey.
The programmes remain faithful to the books and as the themes become darker and more sombre as Poirot becomes older in the books so do they on television.
Agatha Christie’s grandson has said: “Personally, I regret very much that she (Agatha Christie) never saw David Suchet. I think that visually he is much the most convincing and perhaps he manages to convey to the viewer just enough of the irritation that we always associate with the perfectionist, to be convincing!”
BAFTAs
The programme has been nominated for 20 BAFTA awards and been successful in 3 categories.
The show aired on New Year’s Day 2006 and got an audience of 7.4 million viewers.
