Brian is also known as “Memory Lane” and Gerry as “Last Man Standing” which refers to his incorruptibility

Unsolved Crimes and Open Case Squad

The show is about the Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad (UCOS) which is a unit set up by Deputy Assistant Commissioner Robert Strickland (Anthony Calf).  The squad is formed of three detectives brought back from retirement by Superintendent Pulman to investigate cold cases.

Sandra Pulman (Amanda Redman) has ended up heading the unit as “punishment” by her superiors for making the police service a laughing stock by shooting a dog during an armed raid to rescue a hostage.  Sandra has dedicated herself to the police and her love life is a disaster.  This is a running gag through the various serious and at one stage she even tries speed dating.

John Alan “Jack” Halford (James Bolam) retired from the police to care for his wife who was involved in a hit and run car incident.  She dies and although the perpetrator is known he is not successfully prosecuted.  Jack talks to his wife’s memorial in the back garden.  He is a normally placid man but does have a violent temper.

Gerald “Gerry” Standing (Dennis Waterman) is a jack-the-lad ladies man and has three ex-wives.  He is a passionate thief-taker.  His ability to fit and socialise with criminals has made effective in tracking villains but left him open to doubts about his trustworthiness.

Brian Lane (Alun Armstong)has a photographic memory and can recall the details of cases going back years.  He is a recovering alcoholic,  a sufferer of Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCD) and lacking is social skills.  However, his skills and memory make him invaluable to the squad.  He is also a fanatical supporter of football club AFC Wimbledon.

New Tricks is produced by Wall to Wall Television for the BBC. It began as a one-off episode, broadcast on 27 March 2003. This attracted a sufficient number of viewers for the BBC to commission a series of six episodes, which began on 1 April 2004. Subsequently six eight-episode series were commissioned for 2005, 2006 ,2007, 2008 and 2009.
