Homepage ► Jonathan Creek

Jonathan Creek is a crime mystery series based around a magician’s assistant who solves seemingly explicable crimes through logical deduction and his specialised knowledge of illusions.
2004 -
The programme has run from 1997 regularly up until 2004 returning with single episodes in 2009 and 2010. Regular episodes have been 50 or 60 minutes long with longer special programmes. The 2010 episode will take the count to 28.
Caroline Quentin/Julia Sawalha
Jonathan (Alan Davies) was originally paired with author Maddie Magellan played by Caroline Quentin, then TV presenter Carla Borrego played by Julia Sawalha. Sheridan Smith starred as Joey Ross in the 2009 special and will do so in the next special episode. Jonathan works for the illusionist Adam Klaus played by Stuart Milligan.
The series won the BAFTA for Best Drama Series in 1998.
Murders but humour as well
Whilst the crimes being investigated can be quite grim, there is a lot of humour in the show. Guest stars have included Bob Monkhouse, Griff Rhys Jones, Rik Mayall, Jack Dee, Brian Murphy, Maureen Lipman, Bill Bailey and John Bird; although they played the roles straight.
David Renwick wrote the series and he wanted to create a detective series that concentrated on detection rather than action. Instead of who dunnit or why they did it, the emphasis was on the mechanics of how it was done. A common theme was the murder committed in a room locked from the inside and when there is no sign of the perpetrator. Another was the person who seemed to be in two places at once. The series also showed us how some magic tricks are achieved and showed that the secret was often quite banal.
Another theme was Jonathan’s on/off relationships with his female investigators. He had a platonic relationship with Maddie to start out with but this did not last and a past with Carla was hinted at. He frequently also has to extract his employer from the difficult situations that he gets himself into through his insensitive womanising.
