Ghosts, a graveyard and an abandoned sanitorium

Starring John Nettles & Jason Hughes

After Joyce Barnaby swerves off the road into a ditch, believing she has hit someone, the body of a librarian is found in a nearby cemetery.  Amidst stories of ghosts and haunted buildings, can DCI Tom Barnaby convince his wife that she is not to blame - and at the same time identify the real killer on the loose in March Magna?

This is a brand new episode of the popular detective drama Midsomer Murders called The Silent Land.

Joyce crashes

While out driving one night, Joyce Barnaby (Jane Wymark) swerves her car into a ditch, convinced she has hit someone. Her husband DCI Tom Barnaby (JohnvNettles) thinks she is imagining things, but then the body of librarian Gerald Ebbs is found close by on a grave in March Magna cemetery.

The cemetary

Joyce thinks she is responsible for the unpopular Ebbs’ death - though the evidence suggests otherwise - and she remains positive that she saw a person on the road. Ebbs was obsessed with the cemetery, which contains the bodies of many 19th century tuberculosis victims who came for treatment at a nearby sanatorium.

Ghost walks

Local ghost-walk organiser Jeff Bowmaker (Danny Webb) has plenty of spooky stories to tell about the graveyard and the now derelict sanatorium. He also has some distinctly down-to-earth extracurricular activities, which include affairs with several women. He is not the only one, and local passions seem to be stirring up violence. While Barnaby and Jones (Jason Hughes) try to sort fact from fiction, Joyce goes on a ghost walk in the old hospital in a bid to find some answers. As Bowmaker’s tour reaches the ‘staircase of the damned’, someone falls to their death. Can the detectives discover who is killing in March Magna – and why?
