ITV’s Midsomer Murders - Dark Secrets

The new DCI’s second case investigating the death of a social services investigator

Starring Neil Dudgeon, Jason Hughes,Neil Pearson, Edward Fox, Phylldia Law, Beth Goddard and Haydn Gwynne

DCI John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) takes on his

second case as the head of Causton CID.

A fastidious social services investigator (Jeff Rawle) calls on elderly eccentrics William Bingham (Edward Fox) and his wife Mary (Phyllida Law) but is sent away rudely by their daughter Selina (Beth Goddard) and her husband Eddie Stanton (Neil Pearson).

The Binghams live as recluses in upper-class squalor, surrounded by towering piles of newspapers and empty pizza boxes.

Nearby, the Stantons run a stud farm with Ben Viviani (Julian Ovenden), who is in love with Eddie’s daughter Verity (Lucy Briggs-Owen). Ben’s mother Maggie (Haydn Gwynne) also had a run-in with the nosy investigator, so when his body is found in the river, they all come under suspicion.

Barnaby meets the Binghams and learns that they were once happy children of the 1960s, who never recovered from losing their elder daughter and son in a drowning accident.

Passions become aroused as Selina forces a protesting Ben to take her to bed before slashing Maggie’s paintings with a knife.

Later, Mary invites Barnaby to tea but before he arrives, he discovers that her daughter’s body was never found - and then Mary is crushed by a tower of newspapers.

Could a mysterious reference to a moon crater called Bingham hold a clue?
