Homepage Eternal Law

Set in the beautiful city of York, Eternal Law is a six-part series for ITV1 which focuses on two central characters, Zak and Tom, who are angels sent to Earth to both help the community and try to understand the human condition. It has been made by Kudos Film & Television and Monastic Productions who made Life on Mars and Wild At Heart. It was created and written by Ashley Paroah and Matthew Graham. Zak and Tom are both lawyers working or a local legal firm and attempt to influence humans to do the right thing for one another.

However, things do not always go according to plan particularly when the come up against old adversary and dark angel, Richard Pembroke, who is determined they will not succeed in their challenge to lead the community to a more harmonious way of living. Zak is the most senior angel who has been visiting Earth for 200 years. He has developed a cynicism born out of his experiences in assisting and advising humans. However, Tom is on Earth for the first time and he believes the human spirit is a wonderful thing. He has a naivety which is very appealing, but this will cause him problems throughout the series. Zak's dilemma is more critical. The last time he was on Earth he fell in love with a human, Hannah, which completely against angelic law. He has been severely reprimanded and he knows that this is his last chance to hold on to his wings.  At moments of intense emotion the viewer might see a dramatic spread of angel wings as Tom and Zak go about the streets of York, but for the most part they appear just like everyone else. Zac Gist is played by Samuel West, Tom Greening by Ukweli Roach, Richard Pembroke by Tobias Menzies, Hannah English by Hattie Morahan and Mrs Sheringham by Orla Brady.

Episode 1

Ashley Pharoah and Matthew Graham are two angels who are sent to Earth in the guise of lawyers in order to help humankind. Moments after Zak and Tom's arrival in York, the peace of the city is shattered by a shocking act of violence. The pair are then plunged into a court case involving an estranged family and a newlywed. Zak is alarmed to discover that his past has come back to haunt him in the form of old flame Hannah English - much to the delight of his nemesis, Richard Pembroke.

Episode 2

Zak and Tom are drawn into a custody case when a six-year-old boy called Hal asks for their help. Hannah begins her new job working for Richard and the pair soon find themselves in court facing Tom and Zak, who are fighting to restore a happy home life for young Hal. Meanwhile, a delivery at the Belfrey from Mr Mountjoy unsettles Zak, and Mrs Sheringham tells Tom about becoming human.

Episode 3

The Belfry welcomes a rather lively house guest in the shape of pensioner Mack Steen, who is on bail after being charged with ABH for poisoning the owner of his care home. The care home residents, already feeling the loss of Mack, are up in arms over a proposal that they be rehoused when the place comes under threat of closure. Meanwhile time is running out for Zak and Tom as they try to unlock a mystery story that links two old friends - and some long-buried truths.

Episode 4

A whole community unites behind grieving single mother Gemma Manes, who is on trial for the stabbing of her alleged stalker. As counsel for the prosecution Zak is public enemy number one, while Tom feels that there is more to this lonely and bereaved woman's story - but his concern for her results in tragedy.

Episode 5

As her wedding anniversary approaches, Mrs Sheringham becomes overwhelmed with grief and tortured by memories of Billy. Zak and Hannah find themselves defending a young female soldier in a court martial and an agonised Zak watches while Hannah gets closer to Major John Parker. Meanwhile, Tom follows a line of enquiry at the army base which gets him into grave danger.

Episode 6

Last in series. Mrs Sheringham is tempted by an offer to leave York, and Hannah has a decision to make. Meanwhile, Zak and Tom defend a man accused of murdering his brother. The man protests his innocence and as the angels strive to uncover what once bound the Hale brothers, they go head-on into battle with Richard, who has significantly raised his game
