Episode Guide for series two ►

Dame Maggie Smith & Hugh Bonneville lead the cast of Julian Fellowes’ major new drama series Downton Abbey. This is a 90-minute film followed by 6 x 60 minute episodes.

The cast

ITV’s costume drama series, Downton Abbey, written and created by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes and made by Carnival Films for ITV stars Maggie Smith as Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham, Hugh Bonneville as Robert, Earl of Grantham and Elizabeth McGovern as Robert’s wife, Cora, Countess of Grantham.

They lead an all-star cast, which also includes: Penelope Wilton, Dan Stevens, Michelle Dockery, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan, Lesley Nicol, Siobhan Finneran, Rob James Collier, Joanne Froggatt and Rose Leslie.

Downton Abbey - country house

Set in an Edwardian country house in 1912, Downton Abbey portrays the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who work for them.  In 1912, England was teetering on the brink. Apparently placid, still rooted in the traditions of many centuries, it would be less than ten years before the First World War and the Jazz Age had ripped every certainty to shreds. This is the moment when we enter the world of Downton Abbey, the great house of a great family, where the Granthams and their daughters preside over a household in the charge of Carson, the butler, and Mrs Hughes, the housekeeper. All these people must, in their different ways, deal with the changes that are coming.

Episode 1

As Daisy the kitchenmaid opens up the house, a telegram is delivered. It is 16th April 1912 and the Titanic has gone down, taking with it Lord Grantham’s heir, James Crawley, and his son, Patrick. So who is the new heir? Not just to the earldom but to Downton Abbey, itself, which is entailed to the title. Violet, the Dowager Countess, assumes Robert, the present Earl, will break the entail and make an heiress of his eldest daughter, Mary, but Robert is not so sure.

Episode 2

Everyone is anxious at the arrival of Matthew Crawley, the heir presumptive, but he soon encounters problems settling into his new life in Downton, and his mother Isobel immediately crosses swords with Violet. Meanwhile, butler Carson is mortified to be confronted with his past, and housemaid Gwen seems to have a secret correspondent.

Episode 3

When Cora (McGovern) invites Evelyn Napier (Brendan Patricks) to stay at Downton, he brings along his friend Kemal Pamuk (Theo James), an attaché at the Turkish Embassy. Pamuk is attracted to eldest daughter Mary (Michelle Dockery), but an illicit night of passion between the pair ends unexpectedly when Pamuk suffers a fatal heart attack. Mary turns to her mother for help, butthey are not the only ones who know that Pamuk was in Mary's room that night...

Episode 4

The fair arrives in the village and Mrs Hughes finds herself the centre of speculation when she meets a former suitor who makes her question her position at Downton.  Violet & Isobel are in conflict over a medical ailment affecting Molesley.  Elsewhere, Carson fears that there is a thief at Downton.

Episode 5

Sybil informs Gwen that she has applied for a position on Gwen's behalf. Gwen is thrilled to discover she has an interview and she fakes a headache in order to make it. Meanwhile, Daisy is unable to get over what she witnessed on the night of Pamuk's death, and O'Brien and Thomas suspect that the girl knows something. In the village hall, they are preparing for the summer flower show. Isobel learns that Violet always wins the Grantham Cup for Best Bloom, despite Molesley's father, Bill, growing the best roses.

Episode 6

Sybil’s growing interest in politics lands her in trouble when Bates lets slip to Robert that she attended a rally with Branson.  The saga of the wine thief is brought to a head after Bates makes a shocking revelation and hands in his notice.  Edith seems to have found an unexpected admirer when Sir Anthony Strallan calls.

Episode 7

Cora discovers that she is pregnant, which leaves Mary wondering how to answer Matthew’s proposal, since his situation would change completely if the baby turns out to be a boy.  Mary accuses Edith of spreading the story that threatens to ruin her.  O’Brien is angry when she suspects that Cora is going to replace her, so plans an accident for her mistress. Below stairs, Gwen and Thomas may have found new futures for themselves and Bate’s position still hangs in the balance.
