Sir David Jason stars in the emotional, contemporary family drama Come Rain Come Shine as cockney ex-docker Don Mitchell, a man whose family means everything to him.

Don and family

Married to Dora, played by acclaimed actress Alison Steadman, the retired couple have two grown-up children, David (Shaun Evans) and Joanne (Kellie Bright).

Written, developed and executive produced by award winning writer Jeff Pope, the story focuses on Don’s determination to keep his family afloat, emotionally and financially, after they lose virtually everything.

Family values

Don’s strong family values and simple lifestyle contrast vividly with the life his son David, has carved for himself. With his elegant wife, Christina (Anna Wilson-Jones), and young son, Cameron (Drew Blackall), David lives in a big detached home nestling in a quiet, idyllic cul-de-sac. With flash cars on the driveway, property developer David lives the high life and mixes in circles alien to his working class upbringing.

However, all is not what it seems and we soon come to realise David is teetering on the brink of financial meltdown. Come Rain Come Shine is a modern tale of how superficial life can be if you chase credit with no means to pay and no back up plan.

Initially blissfully ignorant of his son’s problems, Don views David through rose-tinted spectacles. He’ll not have a bad word said about David and is his constant champion. Dora, on the other hand, appears more realistic and often questions his affluent lifestyle. Sister Joanne also appears estranged form her wealthy brother as she struggles along as a single parent.

David Jason’s character

For obvious reasons Sir David was nervous of playing cockney characters, but I think he felt the chance to say something about the kind of reckless reliance on credit that has almost brought us to our knees was too good to miss,” said writer Jeff Pope.

Executive producers

Come Rain Come Shine is also executive produced by Sir David Jason and David Reynolds, who have been responsible for producing the highly successful, Diamond Geezer, Ghost Boat, Albert’s Memorial and, A Touch of Frost with Sir David.

We’re delighted to have commissioned Come Rain Come Shine as it’s a wonderfully compassionate script about the importance of family and what happens when there’s the chance you might lose everything,” said ITV’s Director of Drama Commissioning, Laura Mackie.

Two hour programme

Come Rain Come Shine is a 120 minute single drama directed by David Drury.
