Alicia Florrick (Margulies) is a wife and mother whose life is turned upside down when her husband Peter (Chris Noth) is involved in a very public sex and political corruption scandal that lands him in jail. Pushing aside the betrayal and crushing public humiliation, Alicia boldly accepts full responsibility for her family and goes back to work as a defence attorney.

But starting over again isn't easy; she joins a prestigious Chicago law firm as a junior associate and soon discovers the competition in the workplace is fierce. Among the firm's 20-something new recruits is Cary (Matt Czuchry), a recent Harvard graduate who is affable on the surface, but will use any means to ensure that he, not Alicia, secures the one full-time associate position that's available.

Fortunately, Alicia finds an ally in Kalinda (Archie Panjabi), the firm's tough in-house investigator. Gaining confidence every day, Alicia transforms herself from a politician's scorned wife to resilient career woman, all for the sake of providing a stable home for her two children. For the first time in years, Alicia trades in her identity as the 'good wife' and takes charge of her own destiny.

In the series, Alicia represents a stripper who was raped at a stag party and may have previously been abused by her husband. Closer to home, she and her husband Peter discuss whether their children should be allowed to visit him in while he's in prison. And she finds incriminating pictures of him that the kids had hidden to save her from further pain.

Alicia puts her pride and misgivings behind her and represents the son of a former friend who snubbed her as soon as news of the scandal broke out. The boy is accused of murder. Meanwhile, Alicia sees Peter but things turn sour when he takes a call from a prostitute while in her company.
