ITV’s Foyle’s War starring Michael Kitchen

Police investigations during the Second World War

Starring Michael Kitchen, Anthony Howell and Honeysuckle Weeks

Foyle's War was commissioned by ITV after the long-running series Inspector Morse came to an end in 2000. It has aired on ITV1 since 2002 and was originally cancelled in 2007 by director of television Simon Shaps, but due to a number of complaints and positive public demand, ITV decided to revive the series after its sixth series proved to be a ratings success.

War time Hastings

The programme is set during, and after, the Second World War in Hastings, England, where Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen) investigating crime and, frequently, the black market. He is assisted by his driver Samantha "Sam" Stewart (Honeysuckle Weeks) and Detective Sergeant Paul Milner (Anthony Howell).

The programme has run to seven series and an eighth series is planned.  The show consistently gets audiences of over 7 million viewers.

Foyle’s War characters

Michael Kitchen plays Christopher Foyle as a quiet, very moral, unassuming man who doggedly pursues his investigation to conclusion.  He accepts his role as a policeman to be be necessary and important but would prefer to be more directly involved in the war effort.

He is assisted by DS (DI) Paul Milner who returned to the police after being invalided out of the army when he lost a leg in battle.  His wife has difficulty coming to terms with his injury.

The third main character in the series is Samantha Stewart who is seconded to be Foyle’s driver.  She is an enthusiastic  young woman and is sometimes chastised by  DCS Foyle.  As the series progress, he becomes more accepting of her abilities.  She has a number of romantic liaisons including a relationship with Foyle’s son Andrew who is an RAF fighter pilot.

The series

Each series covered a particular time slot during and shortly after the war:

Series One - May to August 1940

Series Two - September to October 1940

Series Three - February to June 1941

Series Four - April to August 1942

Series Five - December 1942 to March 1943

Series Six - April 1944 to May 1945

Series Seven - June to August 1945

Each series contains 2-4 two-hour stories.

The series is commended for its historical accuracy and creator Anthony Horowitz carried out extensive research at the Imperial War Museum who provided him with considerable assistance.  Foyle's War was nominated for best drama series at the 2003 BAFTA Television Awards in 2003.  The show has been a success overseas in United States of America, Canada, South Africa and Australia.
