Romola Garai (Emma, Atonement), Chris O'Dowd (IT Crowd, The Boat That Rocked), Gillian Anderson (The X Files, Bleak House), Richard E Grant (Withnail And I, Gosford Park), Shirley Henderson (Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, Charles II), Amanda Hale (Murderland, Bright Star) and Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, The League Of Gentlemen) have begun filming on BBC Two's bold four-part adaptation of Michel Faber's international best-selling novel, The Crimson Petal And The White, made by Origin Pictures.

Adapted by acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Lucinda Coxon, and directed by award-winning Marc Munden (The Devil's Whore, The Mark Of Cain). This intimate psychological thriller lifts the lid on the darker side of Victorian London revealing a world seething with vitality, sexuality, ambition and emotion.

Sugar - an intelligent young prostitute

This provocative and riveting tale tells the story of Sugar (Romola Garai), an alluring, intelligent young prostitute who yearns for a better life away from the brothel she is attached to – run by the contemptible Mrs Castaway (Gillian Anderson).  Highly sought after and sexually adept, Sugar finds her only comfort in the secret novel she is writing in which a murderous prostitute takes revenge on her clients.

William Rackham

Sugar is a thrilling antidote to William's life, saddled with a pious brother, Henry Rackham (Mark Gatiss), and fragile wife, Agnes Rackham (Amanda Hale). Agnes regularly endures visits from the invasive physician Doctor Curlew (Richard E Grant), leaving her unable to perform her wifely duties.

The supporting cast also includes Tom Georgeson (Bleak House), Liz White (Life On Mars), Blake Ritson (Emma) and Bertie Carvel (Sherlock).

Episode 1

William Rackham is at the end of his tether. Failing as a writer, deeply in debt and unwilling to join his father in business, he is further plagued by his troubled wife, Agnes, who draws the family into disrepute by her reclusive behaviour and her dramatic public outbursts. Her behaviour is made ever worse by the frequent visits of her physician, Dr Curlew.

William finds solace when he seeks out renowned prostitute Sugar, who is attached to the brothel of the formidable Mrs Castaway.

Episode 2

Sugar is determined to develop her hold over William and finds out his address in order to spy on his house, as Lucinda Coxon's ambitious and bold four-part adaptation of The Crimson Petal And The White by Michel Faber, directed by award-winning Marc Munden, continues.

Glimpsing Sugar through the window, Agnes is convinced that the mysterious figure is an angel sent to watch over her. Buoyed by this belief, she begins to recover and attempts to return to society.William moves Sugar out of the brothel into a private house of her own and she finally becomes independent. As the money he gives her piles up, Sugar begins her own ascent into polite society.

Episode 3

William has taken the family business from strength to strength, as Lucinda Coxon's ambitious and bold adaptation of The Crimson Petal And The White by Michel Faber, directed by Marc Munden, continues.

But William's increasingly hectic schedule means that he is too busy to keep going back and forth to Sugar's house in Marylebone. In light of this, William invites Sugar to become governess to his neglected daughter, Sophie.

Thrilled with the news, Sugar arrives at the Rackhams' to discover Agnes is much worse. By chance, Sugar comes into possession of her diaries, which provide an enlightening insight into Agnes's mind.  The sinister Dr Curlew decides that Agnes must be permanently sedated and threatens to have her put into an asylum. After another particularly bad episode, William reluctantly agrees with the doctor and arrangements are made for Agnes to be restrained and taken away.

Episode 4

Sugar's bond with Sophie grows ever stronger but Sugar begins to fear she is pregnant.

Initially buoyed that she might be able to become a more official fixture in William's life, Sugar's hope is short-lived. William is distant, gripped by a morbid grief, and looks instead to a marriage with the more respectable Lady Bridgelow.
