Five bought for £104m

Richard Desmond, owner of the Daily Express and OK! Magazine bought Five TV for £103.5m on 23rd July.

The channel was sold by RTL, the European broadcaster who had written down the station’s value from £398m over the past two years.

Mr Desmond says he will invest in new content, particularly celebrity and reality shows and is interested in picking up Big Brother now that it has been dropped by Channel 4.

He is also expected to cut payroll costs by shedding staff.

Desmond has a five-year £1b turnaround plan for Five that will aim to double it’s audience.  He will be adding another £100m per annum to the programming budget.

The station has patchy coverage across the country and has only 6% of the UK audience.

Five will be advertising heavily in OK! And the Daily Star owned by Desmond.

He has a fortune that is valued at £950m.
